Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers, before you say yes.
The essentials that apply to every Roads of Italy journey: bookings and payments, motorcycles, insurance, documents and support on the road. Departure-specific details live on each tour page.
Why choose Roads of Italy?
Because Italy isn't simply one of our destinations. It's our only destination. Everything we do is focused on Italy, and we personally host every tour. Every mile of this tour follows a route you can preview on our website before you book — not a packaged itinerary pulled from a catalog. Groups are limited to ten motorcycles, the founders are with you from start to finish, and every booking is handled by a licensed Italian tour operator that has been in business since 1976. You're choosing one country done right, not the whole world done in a hurry.
Who actually leads the tour?
The founders — not seasonal freelance guides. Luca and Dario travel the entire route with the group, every day. Luca leads the riders on his motorcycle, while Dario follows in the support van, carrying the group's luggage and ready to help with anything that comes up. Every morning begins with a briefing on the day's ride and the GPX track for that route. We have personally chosen every coffee stop and lunch spot, including places you will never see on a postcard. No one simply hands you an itinerary and sends you on your way.
I have never ridden in Italy. Will I feel comfortable?
Riding in Italy may feel different at first, but you are never left to figure it out on your own. Before every ride, Luca walks the group through the day's route, road conditions, planned stops and any sections that call for extra attention. Luca leads the group on his motorcycle at a comfortable, steady pace, while Dario travels the same route in the support van with the luggage, ready to assist. You also receive the day's GPX track, so you always know where you are headed. And we ride in daylight: the motorcycles are parked while the sun is still up, every day. With decades of riding experience, Luca can tell quickly when someone needs a little more support. When that happens he stays closer to that rider, gives clear practical guidance, and keeps an eye on them through the day. If weather or road conditions change, we adjust the route accordingly. The goal is simple: you enjoy riding Italy with confidence, while we take care of the route and the logistics.
Is this the first Roads of Italy departure?
Yes, and that is exactly what makes it special. Sicily 2026/27 is the inaugural Roads of Italy departure: your chance to be among the very first guests to experience this new project alongside its founders. The group is limited to ten motorcycles so we can give every rider personal attention. Both founders are with you throughout the journey: Luca leads the group on his motorcycle, Dario follows in the support van. The itinerary was scouted on the road, not put together behind a desk. The departure is confirmed no later than 60 days before the start date, once the motorcycles, hotels and experiences have been secured. That way no one has to book a transatlantic flight on uncertainty. Contracts and payments are handled by Il Girasole Scurria Turismo S.R.L., a licensed Italian travel agency and tour operator in business since 1976. For us this is more than another tour date. It is the beginning of Roads of Italy, and you can be part of its very first chapter.
Who manages bookings and payments?
All bookings, contracts and payments are handled directly by Il Girasole Scurria Turismo S.R.L., our licensed Italian travel agency and tour operator partner, active in the Italian travel industry since 1976. This partnership allows Roads of Italy to offer a personal, founder-led experience while giving every guest the security and professional framework of a tour operator with half a century of experience. Payments are not made to individual guides or informal accounts: each guest receives official booking documents and payment instructions directly from Il Girasole.
Is motorcycle rental included in the rider price?
Yes. The BMW F 800 GS is included in the price; the Moto Guzzi V85 TT and the Ducati Scrambler are available for €200 over the whole tour. Your motorcycle is assigned when the reservation is confirmed, subject to availability. Any security deposit, damage excess and rental requirements will be clearly stated in the formal proposal.
Is health and trip-cancellation insurance included?
Yes — health and trip-cancellation insurance is included in the tour price for every guest. The policy is arranged by the tour operator, and coverage limits, exclusions and policy documents arrive with the formal proposal.
Which airports should I use?
The journey begins in Catania and ends in Palermo. Guests should fly into Catania Airport and depart from Palermo Airport. Recommended arrival and departure times will be provided after the tour is confirmed.
Are airport transfers included?
Airport transfers are not included. With your confirmation pack we send tested taxi and private-driver contacts for both airports, and if the group's flights line up we organise a shared transfer. The transfer from the motorcycle handover to the hotel on the final day is arranged by us.
Is the tour conducted in English?
Yes. Pre-departure communication, daily briefings, road support and guest assistance are provided in English — and so are all the guided experiences in the program.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Riders holding a non-EU licence must carry their valid national licence together with an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation. We strongly recommend an IDP for all non-EU riders, as it may also be required by the motorcycle rental partner.
How do booking and payment work?
After receiving the request, Il Girasole sends the guest a formal proposal, booking conditions, insurance information and payment schedule. The reservation becomes confirmed after the required deposit is received. Non-refundable flights should only be booked after written confirmation of the departure.
What happens if the weather is unsafe or a motorcycle breaks down?
Safety comes first. Routes, timing or individual stages may be adjusted if conditions are not suitable for safe riding. If snow, ice or strong winds affect Mount Etna, the excursion is adapted or replaced with an alternative experience of equal value. The support vehicle carries tools and recovery equipment, and the team coordinates assistance so the rest of the journey can continue.
